The objective of this from a GFX perspective was to provide context to the edit by providing photorealistic maps of the road and surrounding geologic features to aid the narrative. We were able to use top-down drone shots to transition the scenes from live-action to a 3d render of the area and provide call-outs to specific positions within the map. We used open-source heightmaps to lay the topography of the area, and traced the map by hand in 3d space onto this topography. Once the road was traced, we rendered the visuals out of Unreal Engine 5 and imported the camera data into Cinema 4d, marked the specific call-outs, and imported that file into After Effects to introduce the graphics.

Scott Speed’s Tail of the Dragon TT, set in Deals Gap at the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, featured the iconic road known as "The Dragon." We were tasked with creating topographic map animations that provided smooth, seamless transitions within the live-action sports film, dynamically showcasing the route in real time and enhancing the storytelling with precision and flow.
